Makeover Madness

First it was Aunt Jemima. Then my beloved Goofus and Gallant. Now they've gone too far. The Sun-Maid Rasion Girl has been remade.

Here she is in 1916, 1956, and 1970. Not too bad. Gibson Girl to Hippie Earth Mother. Now here she is today:

I guess it's a sign of the times that the SMG would be animated and Barbie-fied. But yoga? In that hat? It's too much. Check out the new tv spots. I guess yoga girl will show up in later ads, along with marathon runner and corporate CEO versions.

Look for new versions of the Land O' Lakes Indian Girl and Mr. Peanut.

Speaking of the Land o Lakes Maiden, there is an old trick for this label that must date waaaay back. You simply cut out the knees poking out of the hem of her buckskin dress annd move them where the butter is and suddenly her "greatest assests" are on display for everyone to see.

I remember that one. We used to do something similar with the Pep Boys (Manny, Moe, and Jack). They used to be on matchbooks, and if you cut holes in their crotches, you could insert the matches. For added fun, you moved the cover up and down. Ah, youth.

These "makeovers" are downright depressing. My personal worst was my fave comic The Beano. Its main character Dennis The Menace spent most of his life (30 plus years)in his early teens. Suddenly overnight without warning, they "cutie-fied" him and now he looks like a 5 year old. Another icon from my childhood desecrated. We live in pathetically sad times obsessed with Politically Correct crap and being bossed about all apparently in the name of our own "safety".

Depressing.

Jeez. When I was a kid, I lived in a town with a large Scottish population. I had a classmate that used to bring in Beanos. I thought they were great. At least Beryl the Peril was discontinued before they could ruin her as well.

If they touch Oor Wullie or The Broons, I'm going to be really steamed.

Ah... Beryl The Peril! I think she was in The Dandy or Beezer... can't remember which. It wasn't The Beano cos that had Minnie The Minx! Not having picked up a Beano for many years because of the makeovers, I know for certain The Bash Street Kids also got a makeover and shudder to think how Minnie and Rodger The Dodger look now...

All The Best and keep up the cool work goin down here!
